I loved that shanks never got the arm back. I think it’s kind of ableist that in fantasy and sci Fi, the moment characters lose a limb s countdown begins for them to get a robot prosthetic, or get it healed with magic, or so on. Same with being blind, almost every blind character learns to see using their ears, the force, their haki, the second the fight ends.
One Piece was supposed to be 5 years long. LOL.
I always liked the thought that he did it on purpose.
He says stuff like “I sacrificed it for the next generation” or something like that, pretty often, when asked about his arm.
And the idea that he COULD have killed the Sea King, but chose not to, and instead gave up his arm, it inspired Luffy, and was symbolic of him investing in Luffy.
Shanks was shielding Luffy and had no time to do anything against the Sea King. In my head canon its also the time Shanks unlocked his conquerers haki.
The in-universe explanation does have the minor plot hole of Mihawk and Shank’s rivalry. Mihawk clearly looks at Shanks as one of his only true peers in swordfighting, but thinks it’s “not worth fighting” if he’s missing his arm. We know they had “legendary” battles on the grand line, so even if this was before his status as a yonko, he would still be more than strong enough to save Luffy and stop the sea king without losing his arm.
I feel like he may have let it happen because he doesn’t actually replace or even remedy the lost of his arm (which he totally could because cybernetics and even grafting exists). He goes around still with a single arm and is still one of the biggest menaces to the world government.
You overstate the rebooting. Marvel never did that, and DC has only done hard reboots a few times. More than most franchises sure, but not even 5. Altered timelines and retcons though…. yeah, DC has used a lot of those, and Marrvel has also used them to a lesser degree.
I still think that Shanks did it in purpose to help Luffy and make him see the horrors of the sea. So he has to become stronger
I always took it as just a sacrifice he made for luffy, whether or not he could have kept it, it represented he was willing to literally lose a limb to protect someone else
