1. I have no idea why I wrote “Nezuko” in my script and I blame gremlins
2. The arc of every “good” marine in the story is a progression of finding out that the government is evil and that they cannot pursue justice while working for it, because it keeps trying to force them to engage in corruption and oppression, and the only way to do good is to openly defy it and fight against it.
While I do agree that the WG needs a fundamental reset in order to overcome its evil nature, I don’t know if I’d label all Marines as ‘evil’ – not in the truest sense of the word. Indeed, T Bone and Koby and Smoker are complicit in the crimes the WG commits, be it due to their ignorance of their atrocities or an unwillingness to act against the government itself, but in my eyes, most marines are stuck in between a rock and a hard place. Unless you’re one of the marines who’re blissfully ignorant and/or approving of the Celestial Dragons system (looking at you, GB), any action taken against the WG could get you erased from history/thrown into Impel Down, and at that point, what good are your principles good for? While you’re dead/rotting in prison, pirates the likes of Doflamingo, Crocodile, or Captain Kid are killing innocents out on the open seas – it isn’t an optimal situation, by any means, but proclaiming ‘all marines bad’ as a blanket statement sort of misses some of the nuance I feel Oda put into the story of One Piece. Again, I absolutely agree the marines and the WG need a reset, but it seems only right to address that there’s more going on in One Piece than *just* ‘side A good, side B evil, end of story.’ Such is my interpretation of this issue, at least.
I think part of what makes Nezumi work is that he’s contrasted with Pudding Pudding from a few chapters earlier, showing the difference between a marine who tries to do good even while working for a corrupt system and a marine who fully accepts and abuses the corruption of the world in which they live.
Only exception to AMAB is T-bone and he had to literally let a starving man kill him and claim his bounty to earn that pass.
One thing about Nezumi…
If he hadn’t exaggerated the Straw Hats ruining his schemes for a quick buck as a corrupt Marine contact for Arlong, Luffy would’ve never gotten his first bounty until quite some time.
If all the “good” marines really want to do something good with their positions, just saying the revolutionaries would probably _love_ to have some inside informants
I really like how the german dub straight out calls him “Kapitän Ratte” (Captain Rat) and gives him a rat-like squeaky voice to emphasize that.
Yeah, I’ve had days where I’ve in full confidence said the same word multiple times in a speech only for it to be the wrong one.
Oda is being a bit too realistic.
